SEWING HANDS ~ My daughter, Sarah's site ... sewing for those in crisis in the Missouri area. CARE WEAR ~ Knit, crochet, sew baby items to give to hospitals for distribution.

Since I crochet, knit, and quilt, I have begun going through my stash of yarn and am making crocheted hats for now, with plans of more ambitious projects in the future. Please, join me.
If you haven't the time nor inclination to make items, then your donation of yarn would be greatly appreciated, be it a new skein, or odds and ends you happen to run across. It really doesn't take much to make a difference to someone facing a cold winter.
One, three ounce skein of four ply, worsted weight yarn is enough to make someone a hat.
Six ounces of baby yarn will make a double layered hooded scarf, or baby clothes.
If you would like to donate finished hats, scarves, mittens, baby clothes, afghans, quilts, ect., we would be happy to deliver them to the rescue mission in Boise, Idaho. I have contacted them and was told they would be grateful for the help. And don't forget the little ones might appreciate a handmade toy. Feel free to attach a tag to your item(s) with your name, and/or other information you'd like to share with those we are trying to help, and if your e-mail address is provided I will let you know when your donation arrives.
By teaming up, we can make a difference!
Thank you!

A few of those who could use a hand:
Newborns who might leave the hospital in nothing more than a diaper since the parents are destitute. Baby clothes are needed.
Small blankets for stillborns ... something special in which the unfortunate parents recieve their little ones to say their goodbyes. The parents keep the blankets in rememberance.
Burial gowns for stillborns.
Hats and blankets for those facing terminal illness.

Hats, made in part, with yarn donated by Sarah Sumpter. Thank you, Sarah! |
Sal sent a generous donation of afghan squares and yarn. Many thanks, Sal! |
A photo of some of Sal's beautiful blocks. Very nicely made! |
Update: Thanks, in large part, to Kimberly, Sal, and Sarah, we have 4 afghans, 1 scarf, 4 pairs of mittens, 5 headband/earwarmers, 1 baby sweater, and 26 hats ready to go to the mission! These items have now been delivered as of Monday, November 6, 2000! |

Personal Note: Though there are more delivery entries on the 'Contributors' Page', there have been less this season, 2001/2002. As of last fall my left arm decided to 'go on strike'. Torn muscle, tendonitis, bursitis ...? I couldn't crochet worth anything. :o( But it does seem to be improving, so hopefully I'll be back to work soon. Have been able to finish a baby blanket, and a few hats of late. I know this site is full of thank yous ... but here's another one! There's hardly any way to adequately thank those who have supported this effort.
UPDATE ~ 2003: Work for the mission continues!! :o) Though recovery was a long time in coming I'm back to work again! We now believe I'd torn a tendon while doing farm chores and such injuries are very slow to mend. But mend it has and I've been trying to catch up with the generous yarn donations. :o)
Since the last entry I've made many hats, scarves, afghans ect. and we have since dropped them off at the mission along with others' finished items. I wish everyone who has so generously helped with this effort could be present when we take these items to the mission to share the smiles from those helping to unload the car, and the wonderful feeling we get as we drive away. It's so heartwarming!
Every Little Bit Helps!! Just recently a contributor apologized for her small donation. There certainly was no need. Whether it's one hat or one skein of yarn, that small donation makes a difference in someone's life. Also, when small donations are combined, they add up to help many.
Like the story about starfish someone sent to me ... I don't know the author but it makes a very valid point. In short, a person was seen on the shore throwing stranded starfish back into the water. Another person asked him what difference that could make as there were thousands of them. The first person tossed another one into the water and said it made a difference to that one!
Thanks to donations, large and small, those on the street will be a bit warmer this winter. Thank you!! Warm Wishes, Pat |

PLEASE NOTE: Though this site was originally devoted to crocheters, knitters, and handwork enthusiasts in general, the homeless need other store bought items such as soap, combs, brushes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and so on. If you're able to donate these and / or other personal care items, they would be most welcome and so appreciated!! |
